About The Instructor Rich Strolis has been fishing nearly his entire life. A lifelong 'New Englander', he began fishing for native brook trout in the foothills of the Berkshires in western Massachusetts where he grew up as a kid. After college his career path took him to Connecticut where he found himself on the banks of the Farmington river, and a short drive from the Housatonic. In due time he found himself guiding both rivers for the better part of a decade in between juggling his other career and family. He eventually transitioned into commercial tying and instruction specializing in modern streamers and larger flies for the traveling angler which is what he is most known for today. He hosts tying classes every year focusing on a wide scope of tying techniques both modern and classic, and gives presentations on fly tying, fishing techniques and the various places he has travelled to fish. You could say he is a jack of many trades within the sport of flyfishing, and has worked with many companies over his career developing better gear and materials for the consumer. When not at his vise he can be found chasing just about anything that swims and developing new flies that solve angling problems. He is currently a signature fly designer for the Montana Fly Company, and advisor to Regal Vise. His patterns have appeared in several national magazines and books, and in 2016 he wrote his first book Catching Shadows: Tying Flies For the Toughest Fish and Strategies For Fishing Them. He writes yearly for various magazines including but not limited to Flyfisherman, Fly Tyer Magazine, Fly Fusion as well as a monthly newsletter filled with tying tips, instructional tying videos, fishing information and other relevant news in the sport.
