INTERMEDIATE FLY TYING CLASS - GUIDE FLIES FOR TROUT
with Larry Antonuk and Lew Derby

OVERVIEW: In this class we'll focus entirely on 'Guide Flies' - in other words, deadly effective flies that have proven popular with guides this year, and recent seasons passed! The beauty of Guide Flies is that they work; but they can also be tied quickly - with no wasted effort on fancy features, and usually using just 3 or 4 materials! We'll explore a variety of such current patterns, but also look into a some of production fly tying techniques used to produce them. We'll tie several of each pattern featured, with the goal of filling up your fly box. Heading off for a big destination trip with your buddies later this year and you're on the hook to do some tying? Then this is the class for you!
GOAL: At the end of this class, participants will leave with an enhanced knowledge of the different materials and techniques specific to tying simple yet deadly Guide Flies. Students will tie a variety of these proven patterns in sizes that are fishable, and should depart not only with a fist full of flies, but with a solid skillset enabling them to tie such patterns faster and more efficiently!
PREREQUISITES: Students must be 12 years old or older. An intermediate level of fly-tying experience and skill is required for this class. Please bring your personal vice and tools if desired, though a vice and tools can be furnished with advance notice. All materials required to tie the hosted flies in class will be provided.
CLASS SIZE: 10 MAX
About The Instructor
Larry Antonuk began his fly tying journey in northern Wisconsin, tying jigs to support his father's walleye fishing habit. Since then he's studied with dozens of notable fly tyers, both at home and abroad. While living in Nottingham, England for three years he was an active member of the Fly Dresser's Guild. On his return to the states in 2003 he re-launched the Monadnock TU Chapter and began taking all the available weekend seminars held at Hunter's Angling in New Boston. In 2006 he was awarded a Traditional Arts Apprenticeship by the NH Council on the Arts, studying for a year with a Master artist in Concord. Five years later he received his Master Artist designation after taking on an apprentice of his own. Currently Larry focuses on tying traditional salmon flies for display in frames and domes. A juried member of the League of NH Craftsmen, he has demonstrated fly tying at the annual Sunapee Craft Fair for the last 15 years. He also teaches fly tying each winter in the Monadnock Region, both in Keene and Peterborough.
